The bustling Canterbury region is simply bursting with activities and stunning scenery to occupy your days during your visit. You are spoilt for choice, with many opportunities to enjoy the lush green plains, snow-capped mountains and lakes and rivers of the region. We definitely recommend you visit some of the delightful resort towns, located within an hour or two of Waipuna, or go further afield on the iconic TranzAlpine train.

The historic French village of Akaroa is just under 70km from Waipuna on the Banks Peninsula. Akaroa offers quaint architecture, galleries, craft stores and fantastic restaurants and cafes. The township sits on Akaroa Harbour, where you can take part in water sports, hop on a cruise, and see some incredible wildlife, such as the famous Hectors dolphins, and blue penguins. Banks Peninsula is a spectacular part of Canterbury, with rolling hills, lots of beautiful bays and hidden inlets. A day trip is the perfect way to soak up the magic of this special place.

To the north of Waipuna is the resort town of Hanmer Springs, which is most famous for its Thermal Pools and Spa with mineral waters. Hanmer also offers some great hiking and biking trails, and there are excellent local skifields nearby. Enjoy lively boutique shops and fabulous bars and restaurants, or satisfy your inner adrenalin junkie with bungy jumping or jet boating on the nearby Waiau River! There is something for everyone in Hanmer Springs, just a short 1.5 hours drive from Waipuna. It is another wonderful day trip to incorporate as part of your stay.

If you are keen to head into the mountains of the South Island, a trip to Arthur’s Pass is a fantastic option. Take the TranzAlpine train from Christchurch and enjoy spectacular scenery from the comfort of your carriage. Stop in Arthurs Pass village for lunch and take in the native birdlife and breath-taking beauty of the Southern Alps.

These are just a small selection of some magical experiences on offer in Canterbury! Your host Merv at Waipuna has extensive knowledge and experience of the wider Canterbury region and is more than happy to offer advice and suggestions to ensure you see the best it has to offer.
